A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Russia.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reports that a 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck Russia's eastern coast.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was about 55 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city of around 181,000 people. 

The quake was around 30 miles deep and struck in the early hours of Sunday morning local time.

The US Tsunami Warning System warns that "hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300km [approximately 186 miles] of the epicenter along the coasts of Russia."
