Daisy Ridley Will Play Rey in a New 'Star Wars' Film: Here's What We Know So Far

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said at the Star Wars Celebration in London that Daisy Ridley would reprise her role as Rey in a new Star Wars film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and written by Steven Knight. The film, which does not yet have a title or a release date, will be the first Star Wars feature film released since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker and will follow Rey as she establishes a new Jedi Order following the fall of the First Order and the Sith.

But what else do we know about this highly anticipated project? Here are some details that have been revealed or speculated so far:

- The film will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, which means it will explore the aftermath of the final battle between Rey and Palpatine, as well as the fate of the galaxy and the Force. It will also show how Rey deals with her heritage as a Palpatine and a Skywalker, and how she honours the legacy of her mentors Luke and Leia.

- The film will focus on Rey’s journey as a Jedi Master, and how she trains a new generation of Force users. According to Kennedy, the film will introduce new characters and planets, as well as revisit some familiar ones. It is possible that some of Rey’s allies from the sequel trilogy, such as Finn, Poe, Rose, and BB-8, will make appearances or cameo roles.

- The film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who is the first woman and the first person of colour to helm a Star Wars movie. Obaid-Chinoy is an acclaimed filmmaker who has won two Oscars for her documentary shorts Saving Face and A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness. She has also directed episodes of Ms Marvel for Disney+, another groundbreaking project featuring a female superhero of colour.

- The film will be written by Steven Knight, who is best known for creating the hit series Peaky Blinders, and films such as Eastern Promises, Locke, and Serenity. Knight replaced Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, who left the project in February due to creative differences.

- The film is one of several Star Wars movies currently being developed at Lucasfilm, along with projects from James Mangold, Dave Filoni, Taika Waititi, and Shawn Levy. However, it is unclear when these films will be released, as Disney has removed Star Wars: Rogue Squadron from its schedule, and shelved Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie.

As a fan of Daisy Ridley’s Rey and her arc in the sequel trilogy, I am very excited to see her return to the Star Wars universe and continue her story. I think she is a compelling and inspiring hero who deserves more screen time and exploration. I am also curious to see how Obaid-Chinoy and Knight will bring their vision and style to the franchise, and what new adventures they will create for Rey and her friends.
