A Tribute to Len Goodman: The King of Ballroom

The iconic ballroom dancer and judge on Dancing with the Stars and Strictly Come Dancing, Len Goodman, has died at the age of 79. He was well-known in the dancing community for his wit, knowledge, and humanity. In addition, he was a well-known educator, choreographer, and author who worked diligently to promote and preserve the art of ballroom dancing.

In a working-class household, Goodman grew up after being born in London in 1944. He started dancing at the age of 19 after a friend suggested he take a class to meet girls. He soon discovered his passion and talent for ballroom dancing and went on to compete in various national and international competitions. He won the British Exhibition Championships four times and represented England in the World Championships.

In 1977, he retired from competitive dancing and opened his own dance school in Dartford, Kent. He taught thousands of students over the years, including some celebrities and professional dancers. He also wrote several books on ballroom dancing, such as The Complete Guide to Ballroom Dancing and Len's Lost London.

Goodman gained prominence as a judge on the famous reality TV programmes Dancing with the Stars and Strictly Come Dancing, both of which he joined in 2005 and 2004. He was known for his honest and constructive feedback, as well as his catchphrases such as "It's a ten from Len" and "Pick of the bunch". He was also recognised for his impartiality and honesty, as he frequently protected the candidates from harsh criticism. He retired from both shows in 2016 and 2017 respectively but made occasional appearances as a guest judge.

Goodman was married twice and had one son, James, from his first marriage. He is survived by his second wife, Sue Barrett, whom he married in 2012. He also had four grandchildren.

Goodman was a true legend of ballroom dancing, who inspired generations of dancers and viewers with his charisma, knowledge and kindness. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and fans around the world. Rest in peace, Len Goodman.
