"Marie Antoinette" Historical Drama Series Premieres on PBS: A Must-Watch for Fans of the Genre

Check out Marie Antoinette, a sumptuous series that chronicles the life of the well-known French queen who was killed during the French Revolution, if you enjoy historical dramas. Deborah Davis (The Favourite), the show's creator, and Capa Drama and Banijay Studios France are the producers. The series debuted on Canal+ in France last year and has since been sold to more than 70 countries and regions, including PBS Distribution in the United States, BBC Two and iPlayer in the United Kingdom, and BBC First in Australia.

Marie Antoinette's 12-episode first season covers the period from the time she arrived in France as a young bride until the time she was crowned queen. She is portrayed in the series as a cutting-edge, contemporary lady who tries to fit in at the repressive, tyrannical court of Versailles. Her husband's family is hostile towards her, particularly his brothers Provence (Jack Archer) and Chartres (Oscar Lesage), who conspire to harm her. Louis XVI (Louis Cunningham), who is more interested in hunting than consummating their marriage, is another issue she must cope with in her miserable marriage. She finds comfort in her relationships with Saint-Georges (Yoli Fuller), an accomplished musician of African heritage, Lamballe (Jasmine Blackborow), her brother Joseph II (Jonas Bloquet), and all of them.

Emilia Schüle (Ku'damm 56/63) portrays Marie Antoinette, James Purefoy (Rome) portrays Louis XV, Gaia Weiss (Vikings) portrays Madame du Barry, Marthe Keller (Marathon Man) portrays Maria Theresa of Austria, Roxane Duran (The White Ribbon) portrays Joséphine de Beauharnais, and Nathan Willcocks (Dunkirk) portrays Mercy. The series also includes spectacular sites such as Versailles Palace, Fontainebleau Castle, Vaux-le-Vicomte Castle, Chantilly Castle, and Compiegne Castle, as well as stunning costumes made by Madeline Fontaine (Jackie).

The good news for Marie Antoinette lovers is that the show has already been renewed for a second season, which will broadcast on PBS in the United States on March 19.
